What Is Play-Down?
Playing Down allows players who may benefit from additional support, emotionally, socially, physically, or technically, to participate in a younger or less demanding training environment to ensure they continue to enjoy the game and develop at an appropriate pace.
Key Principles
- Player‑centred decision-making: Choices are made based on the player’s holistic needs, prioritizing their confidence, comfort, and readiness.
- Alignment with the LTPD model: Ensures players develop strong fundamentals without pressure, supporting long-term progression over short-term outcomes.
Purpose of Playing Down
- To match players with an environment suited to their current stage of development, helping them experience success, confidence, and enjoyment.
- To provide an appropriate level of challenge while ensuring the game remains fun, accessible, and positive.
- To protect long-term development, ensuring players strengthen foundational skills and emotional resilience before advancing to more demanding levels.
To support overall well-being, reducing stress, anxiety, or negative experiences that can occur when players are placed in environments beyond their readiness.
